Skills for Disagreeing Better Workshop
Our goals for the evening:- Grow in understanding of the values and concerns of people who differ from us politically
- Build skills for listening so that the other person feels heard
- Build skills for sharing our viewpoints in ways others might hear, even if they disagree
In a world of divisions, our faith calls us to mutual respect, curiosity, and honoring the image of God in others, even when we disagree. But in today’s polarized climate, disagreements can feel like personal battles. We often don’t see people on the other side as they see themselves, with their core values and central concerns. Instead, we’re tempted to see our own side as principled and the other as self-interested. And when we try to talk across that gap, we often lack the skills to listen carefully, find common ground, and share our perspectives in ways that connect rather than deepen misunderstanding.
Our politics are also often shaped by our racial, cultural, and ethnic identities, and political division can create barriers to pursuing God’s justice together, including racial justice and reconciliation. Building on April’s Ministry of Racial Justice & Reconciliation speaker event with Justin Giboney, this workshop, led by Braver Angels, will explore how we may unintentionally contribute to polarization, and give us tools to lean into Spirit-led conversation across differences as part of our discipleship.
Whether you’re navigating disagreement at the dinner table, in the church, or in the public square, these skills can help us reflect the unity and charity of the body of Christ, so we can stay in relationship with one another through difficult conversations, rather than avoiding them.
