MRJR Pilgrimage
All are invited to join in a Pilgrimage Summer!
There are three different experiences to engage justice and reconciliation in our neighborhoods. Sign up for one or all three events!
These pilgrimages, hosted by the Ministry of Racial Justice and Reconciliation, are experiences that expand our understanding of our neighborhoods through the story and perspective of indigenous and marginalized communities. We want to see God’s work of justice and reconciliation right where we are. Each pilgrimage includes personal preparation prompts before the trip and reflection prompts afterward as a way of setting intention around the experience.
Adults and children (age dependent on the trip) are welcome! Pilgrimages in parks and neighborhoods include using paved and unpaved paths, up to 3 miles depending on the location.
Self-Guided Central District Pilgrimage
You choose the date and time!
In 2023, a group from Bethany participated in our first MRJR Pilgrimage in Seattle's Central District. This walking tour connected us with the story of redlining in Seattle, a practice that impacted the racial and social dynamics of our city and country. Our guide has since collaborated with others in Seattle to create a self-guided tour. You and your family are invited to engage in this self-guided tour of the Central District, complete with a map, stopping points, narration as you walk, and images and links to find out more! Register to get the guide and start the tour!
Bainbridge Island Pilgrimage
Sunday, July 12 | 10am-12pm | Bainbridge Island
The Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial honors the first Japanese Americans to be excluded, forcibly removed from their community, and incarcerated during World War II. We will take the ferry from downtown Seattle to spend time together in this story on Bainbridge. Carpool, ferry schedule, and preparation materials will be arranged ahead of time. Individuals and families are welcome!
Licton Springs Pilgrimage
Sunday, July 20 | 2-4pm | Bethany Green Lake & Licton Springs
Licton Springs is a site that holds cultural significance to Coast Salish peoples across the Puget Sound region since time immemorial, and it is within walking distance of Bethany Green Lake. Pastor Phil Maulding will share knowledge he has learned about the springs, the land, and the people through his relationship with the Duwamish and from his personal call to connect with the story of the indigenous communities of this area.
