The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

Discussion Questions

Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.

  • Begin by reading Luke 4:16-21, John 8:31-34 aloud, taking turns reading the passages.
  • Pray over the group before beginning discussion.
  • In considering the roads of spiritual vs physical freedom, which of the two roads do you frequently find yourself on?
  • Why do you think these two roads exist? What feeds those two perspectives?
  • Is there an area of physical oppression where you feel that the church has been silent?
  • When considering all those things that people can be slaves to (slaves to our appetites, slaves to the law), which do you most need freedom from?
  • How do you balance personal freedom with systemic freedom?
  • Pastor Richard said that before we can say “no” to that which enslaves us, we need to say “yes” to our identity in Christ.
  • Distribute the Identity Truths document. Practice: for the month of July, start each day by looking in the mirror and naming yourself with a different truth on the list each day (i.e. “I am a child of God,” “I am beloved.”) Take note of how it makes you feel. Are any of these difficult for you to identify with? Pray that God will help you believe that you are who He says you are.
  • Practice: Reflect on the thing that you said you most need freedom from. Consider a related fast for the month of July.
  • How will you take your freedom to set others free? To find ways that you can plug into what Bethany is already doing to invest in the cause of freedom in Seattle and the world, contact sarar@churchbcc.org.
