The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

Small Group Sermon Discussion Resources

July 10, 2022

Parables
Luke 10:25-37
John Wayne Seitzler, Director or Wilderness Ministry

The characters of the lawyer, priest, and Levite are carrying beliefs that result in them missing their calling to bless the world in the way of God. Through the love and compassion of the Good Samaritan, we, as a community, are being invited to release stagnant ideology in order to move into a greater participation in the story of God.

Discussion Questions
Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.

Begin by reading Luke 10:25-37 aloud, taking turns reading the passages.

Pray over the group before beginning discussion.

What ideologies do you see keeping Christians from loving their neighbor?
What ideologies might be keeping you from loving your neighbor?

When you look at the characters in the story, who do you see yourself as?
Which character do you see the Bethany community as a whole as?

John Wayne said that we all have questions, whether conscious or subconscious, that we use to identify whether others are inside or outside of our own camp. What questions might you be holding that cause you to exclude others?

With whom do you find yourself placing ideology above relationship? How can you seek out relationship with people who have conflicting ideologies this week?
Consider challenging yourself to seek out people with whom you believe you can find no common ground in idelogy. What would it look like to actively look for common ground?

Do you find yourself judging your own value or the value of others based on production?
How can you learn to lean into transformation over production in how you value people, including yourself?

What rhythms of rest or Sabbath can you begin incorporating?
What can your small group do to support you in these rhythms?

Participation in bringing God’s kingdom to life requires rhythms of rest and service. Which of these two do you find yourself leaning into and which and which do you need to lean into more to achieve this balance?
For help in finding this balance, consider looking at our Inhaling and Exhaling behaviors.
