The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

Advent: The Times are Changing

Matthew 2:5-8
Richard Dahlstrom, Senior Pastor, www.spiritsoulbody.org

To follow Christ means to embrace three significant changes:

  • The Wise Men: A change of how we view revelation.
  • Herod: A change in our view of power.
  • Bethlehem: A change of how we view place

Discussion Questions
Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.
  • Like the children shared at the start of service, what is one word you think of at Christmas?
  • Read Deuteronomy 4:29 aloud. As we aim to “seek God with all our hearts”, what does it look like to pay greater attention? How is God speaking through your current context of life? What in our non-religious based experiences is Christ speaking through?
  • Which “-isms” of your own life threaten the reign of God’s good reign in your life?
  • What is the significance does it hold that Jesus’ genealogy contains every type of person we think would not be qualified for God’s kingdom or the lineage of Christ?
  • How does this examination of Jesus’ genealogy affect how you view your own family and story?
  • What place has been a space of safety and security for you?
  • Considering how God redeems physical spaces, have you ever walked into a particular space and felt the presence of God?
