The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

(dis)Placed: Fracture, Community and the Way Forward

James 4:1-10
Abby Odio, Pastor of Teaching and Formation, abbyo@churchbcc.org

The current divisions within our families, churches and communities are real and deep. Without mixing words, James speaks to followers of Christ attempting to navigate such divisions and invites them to reimagine a better way forward through the following practices:

  • Refocus
  • Realign
  • Receive

Discussion Questions

Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.

  • Read James 4:1-10 aloud
  • Reference the Inhaling, exhaling practice Pastor Abby mentions here
  • REFOCUS:
  • Pastor Abby reiterates the question that James asks: What are the cravings at war within you? What do you not have that you desire- and what are you doing to get it?
  • Is there an area in your life where you need to refocus?
  • From a practical perspective, how does one refocus from their own desires to align with God’s desires?
  • Take a moment to pray SPECIFICALLY for the members of your group and the areas in which they need to refocus.
  • REALIGN
  • Again, Pastor Abby reframes a question from James; Who have you aligned yourself with? Who or what is shaping your heart and your desires?
  • How can you adjust your week to spend more time with the Lord this week? [Leaders: you might consider making a note of these and checking in with group members during the week.]
  • Once again, take a moment to pray SPECIFICALLY for the members of your group and the way in which they plan to realign this week.
  • RECEIVE
  • When in the course of life are you most aware that you know you’ve received “great grace?”
  • In light of Pastor Abby’s sermon conclusion, take some time to go around the group and tell each person sincerely, “[Name], God’s grace in Christ is greater. Receive it.”
