Discussion Questions
Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.
- Begin by reading John 13:34-35, 15:13 aloud, taking turns reading the passages.
- Pray over the group before beginning discussion. Option to pray the Lord’s Prayer together as a group.
- Icebreaker: How do you define love?
- Pastor Richard said that we often fall into three categories when it comes to love: ambivalence, confusion, or ignorance. When it comes to these three, where do you find yourself the most?
- In what circumstances do you find that it becomes most difficult for you to demonstrate love?
- Do you ever find yourself trying to love through your own power (self-discipline, scripture memorization, etc.) and finding it ineffective? Share that experience.
- When you think about your identity in Christ, what characteristics come to mind (who does the Bible say you are)? Read or distribute the “Identity Truths” document.
- Which one(s) do you most identify with?
- Which one(s) on the list are hardest for you to internalize?
- If Jesus were standing here, which would you most need/want Him to call you?
- Is there a group of people that you find difficult to love? (i.e. people with different political opinions)
- If you’re meeting in person, take some time as a group to wash each other’s feet, being sure to check on everyone’s comfort level with touching.
- Is there a way that you are currently serving or can begin to serve that goes against power structures (refugee ministry, community meal, etc.)?
- Is there someone from whom you need to seek forgiveness?
- Is there someone you need to forgive?
- Pray together for the Holy Spirit’s help to do this.
