The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

One Another Series: Speak Truth to One Another

Ephesians 4:7-16

Abby Odio, Pastor of Teaching and Formation, abbyo@churchbcc.org

The church in Ephesus was no stranger to division. As the Apostle Paul encourages the church towards unity, he does so by insisting they speak the truth to one another. As we seek to be a unified church, we lean into Paul’s teaching with a specific focus on these three words from our text:

I. Deceit

II. Truth

III. Love

Discussion Questions

Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.

  • Begin by reading Ephesians 4:7-16 aloud, taking turns reading the passages.
  • Pray over the group before beginning discussion.
  • Pastor Abby describes a state of being called “Anomie” (ANNA-ME), which she said is a growing mistrust that a person feels. Share a time when you found yourself in a state of “Anomie”.
  • Abby shares about the “great deception” of Genesis 1 and 2 in the garden. In what ways have you been deceived about who you are and the true identity you share in Christ?
  • Where do you see your choices being shaped by the “slippery little snake” of deception in your life? (e.g. “you’re on your own”, “you have to seek your well being above others”, etc.)
  • Where do you go for truth? Or where have you found truth recently?
  • What truth about who God is, is especially relevant for you in this season? Like Pilate standing before Jesus, if you were face-to-face with Christ today in a private moment, what truth might he offer you? (Take some time in prayer to consider this question as a group).
  • Share about a time someone spoke truth to you. How did you receive it? Was it easy or difficult to hear? Why, and how did it impact you?
  • If you have a sense of where God may be inviting you to speak truth, share it with the group. How might you speak this truth “in love”? What perspectives might the group have to offer you?
  • Abby invites us to embody the mind of Christ. How has/does/could this look in your life? Invite you group to pray for you in that.
