Embracing Mystery: The Story of Job: The Heart of the Matter
Job 19:21-27
Chris Lyons, Pastor of Children Youth and Family, chrisl@churchbcc.org
Our theology of suffering can be made right by living in the tension of HOPE in the midst of the HURT. The two things that MATTER…
I. My hurt matters
II. My hope matters

Discussion Questions
Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.
Begin by reading Job 19:21-27 aloud, taking turns reading the passages.
During the Job series, how have you been finding that your theology of suffering is “backwards?”
Despite Job’s suffering, he was confident that God would show up. In your suffering, where have you seen moments of this type of confidence?
Have you had the experience of moving from a transactional faith to a relational faith?
Pastor Chris said that we should be a church that demonstrates that hurt matters.
How have you experienced in the church a demonstration that your hurt doesn’t matter?
How have you experienced a demonstration in the church that your hurt DOES matter?
How can you care for people in our church in a way that shows that their hurt matters?
Share your own story of your Job moments with the group.
Practice: Consider going through the exercise that Chris described from Winter Camp, either on your own or in the group. Use a dry erase marker to write down the lies that you believe about yourself and then erase those to write the truths that God says about you. (Need help with this? Feel free to use the Identity Truths)
