The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

Following the Way of Christ: The Gospel of Christ: The Way

Mark 1:1-11
Scott Sund, Bethany Senior Pastor

I. Messiah declared

II. Mission designed

III. Meaning desired

BIG IDEA: Mark’s story of Jesus may become, if you let it, a place of hope and discovery and invitation to the power, peace, and purpose of God in your life. Who you say Jesus is has the possibility to lead you on the way to Christ in real and powerful ways in the season ahead.

Discussion Questions

Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.

Begin by reading Mark 1:1-11 aloud, taking turns reading the passages.

Pray over the group before beginning discussion.

1. Pastor Scott reminded us that the Messiah coming in the form of Jesus reminds us that God keeps His promises. What promise of God are you clinging to today?

2. Do you ever feel that your failures disqualify you from God using you in His work in the world?

3. How does your relationship with your family of origin impact your ability to believe that your Heavenly Father is well pleased with you?

4. When you consider being anchored in God’s identity, which aspect of His identity do you find most difficult to believe you embody? (NOTE: If you need a guide for this, use the Identity Truths list).

5. Pastor Scott reminded us that God is calling us to participate, not to just watch. In what ways are you using your own individuality to participate in what God is doing in Seattle and the world?

a. In what ways might He be calling you to do that?

[NOTE: Some people know they are called, but not sure how. To find out how you can use your own giftings to serve, go to https://churchbcc.org/greenlake/serve.]

6. Pastor Scott said that another way to say that God is well pleased in us is to say that He delights in us. How does it feel to hear that God delights in you?
