The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

Seasons a Time for Everything: In Every Season
Luke 4
Abby Odio, Pastor College & Career, abbyo@churchbcc.org

What is your calling? Everywhere we go we see this tension of brokenness and goodness, tragedy and beauty, heartbreak and glory. It's in your world today.
In the midst of this tension—Jesus has called every single one of us to step into the world and to love it the way He did. This calling is not for another season—it's for today, right now, in this very season.

1. What season are you in in your life right now?
2. That is the significance of the word “today” in Luke 4:21? How does the use of this same word in Luke 19:5, 9 and 23:43 inform your answer?
3. Abby talked about our tendency to reach for Jesus to get a quick fix to our problems. What did she say we need instead?
4. What did Abby say was the significance of the phrase “in your hearing?”
5. How did Jesus react to the context in which he lived? In what ways did he subvert it and in what ways did he uphold it?
6. What is your context? Where do you live? Where do you work? Who are the people around you? What language do you speak? What’s your neighborhood like? What needs are there?
7. How can you both uphold and subvert your context as you participate in Jesus’s mission?
8. How does temptation relate to calling?
9. How would you articulate your calling in your context?
10. Do you sense a particular temptation that comes with that calling?
11. How do temptations serve as important opportunities for us?
