The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

Drawn to the Margins

Richard Dahlstrom, Senior Pastor, stepbystepjourney.com

The mother in this story reveals that compassion, persistence, and humility are the key ingredients of intimacy, as revealed in this three-act play.

I. Context: Key Players
   A. Jesus
   B. The Woman
   C. The Disciples

II. Jesus’ Response

III. Her Counterresponse
_______________________________________________________________________________________________

1. To whom might Christ be calling you to “see”? In your seeing, how might you seek to suffer with this person or persons?

2. Are there issues related to “categories” of people that challenge you? What opportunities do you have to know someone and hear their story related to that “category?”

3. In what areas of your life are you approaching God in humility with open hands seeking discernment, peace and healing?

4. What testimonies of persistence with God do you have in your life? Where might you need strength for greater persistence now?

5. Where might your boundaries need to be made more penetrable to avail yourself to the Spirit’s call on your life?

6. Are there ways in which you feel like a second-class citizen? What might God’s response to the woman mean for you?

7. Are boundaries needed in your life so that your “yes” can truly be a yes?
