The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

Discussion Questions

Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.

Read Romans 1:1-2
  1. What encounters have you had with other believers in the “body” that have either encouraged or discouraged you in your faith?
  2. In what ways is your faith background characteristic of a dualistic view in which “spiritual” matters are elevated above “physical” ones?
  3. How has this shaped your world view and view of God?
  4. Pastor Richard set up the dichotomy between “withdrawal” and “incarnation”:
  5. In what areas of life are you apt to withdraw?
  6. In what ways are you feeling called to engage, to be the presence of Christ incarnate?
  7. Pastor Richard described the movement of God’s glory from dwelling in the tabernacle (mobile), to the temple (stationary), to within US! How does this change your view of church and encountering/engaging with the Spirit of God in the world?
  8. Where have you been challenged to believe and see God’s presence in the world? How can you imagine God to indeed be present in even these places?
  9. What have you made peace with in your life in the body, that as Richard said, is “not normal”? (i.e. Poor sleeping habits, relationship with food, unhealthy fitness activity or lack thereof, destructive sexual practices, etc.)
  10. The profound reality of God’s spirit dwelling within us is an invitation for each moment, encounter and circumstance to be an opportunity for worship (i.e. Being attentive to the spirit and glory of God among you).
  11. With this reality in view, how might you worship God in your life in the body this week?
