The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

Catalytic Bodies
John 5:1-9, Romans 12

Kendy Easley, Executive Pastor, Head of Staff

By taking on human form, Jesus demonstrated the importance of the body. Our bodies are the physical means through which our spiritual transformation is lived out as a blessing in the world.
  1. Incarnation as Intervention
  1. Our Bodies, Our Responsibilities
  1. Surrendering Circumstances

Discussion Questions
Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.
  1. Have you in past or present served in Children’s Ministry (at Bethany or elsewhere)? Based on the announcement for the “say yes” campaign, have you considered serving at Bethany?
  2. Take 5 minutes to complete the attached Body Reflection questionnaire individually. What is one thing that surprised you in reflecting on your body?
  3. What about your body are grateful for to the Lord?
  4. Pastor Kendy shared about her experience as a child thinking that getting a cold meant she hadn’t been grateful to God for her nose?
  5. As a child, in what ways did you think about your body in connection with your spiritual life or with God?
  6. How has this shaped your world view and view of God?
  7. God came in flesh, taking on human form in Jesus, bringing honor to physical matter. What does that mean to you in practical everyday ways?
  8. What are your habits supporting good sleep, good movement, good food?
  9. How might these relate to the Rule of Life we’ve been discussing over the past few months?
  10. Jesus asks us, “Do you want to be whole?” in your spirit, soul (mind, will, emotions), and body; what are your “if only” excuses that prevent you in from stepping into that in the same way as the man at the pools?
  11. How can the group be praying for your journey towards wholeness in the body this week?
