The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

The New Shape of Things
Acts 1:12-21

Abby Odio, Pastor of Teaching and Formation

In Acts chapter 1 we see Peter step into an essential role for God’s Kingdom. Similar to Peter, we all have an essential Kingdom role to play at this moment in history. As we explore Peter’s story in greater depth, we glean two essential learnings:

We learn how to turn

We learn how to relate

Discussion Questions
Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.

How would you describe the work that you have been given in this season? (In a job, at home, with family, or what else?)

Pastor Abby said that “everyone is essential” in the work of God’s kingdom. Do you see your own life this way? Why or why not?

Read Luke 22:31-34. What does this tell us about Peter’s past, or his “resume” so to speak?

What does it tell you that God would use someone who had failed as badly as Peter to ultimately lead the church?

Someone asked Pastor Abby if perhaps “God is doing something in you before he is doing something through you.” What is an area that you think God might be wanting to work within you?

Where are you finding yourself wanting to “turn” in this season? To what, to where, to whom? Know this: God has given grace upon grace no matter where we are, and is always there when we turn to him.

Our primary calling is to a person - to Jesus. What habits have you been embracing in this season to turn to Jesus? What habits would you like to grow in? How?

Pastor Abby talked about learning to love others on a deep, gut level. Think about: who is someone you need to learn to understand and love in a new way?

We are called to turn to Jesus, and relate to others in love. What is one way for you to live into this teaching in the coming week?
