The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

Discussion Questions
Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.

  • What is your favorite Thanksgiving meal item? What do your edited plans look like this year?
  • Moses spoke of the consequences of disunity and the hope of unity. He declared, “unity is possible!” Where have you seen this to be true in this season? Where do you find it challenging to believe it’s possible?
  • Moses shared that like Joel, prophets of the Old Testament could be tested by their lifestyle and behavior. False prophets could be identified by their pursuit for popularity. In a time where there are competing voices of all kinds, how might you test the wisdom and faithfulness of those you are impacted by?
  • Moses shared of a conversation with another Bishop in Rwanda in which he was given the illustration of the body. Certain parts of the body fulfill their function, but it may smell bad or not be as pleasant as other parts.
  • The same is true of the body of Christ. What are some of the roles in our community that cause you to feel uncomfortable?
  • How might this illustration help you rethink the significance and meaning of these roles?
  • Moses shared about the benefit or the advantage of the Holy Spirit, not as greater power or influence, but as the needed presence of God to draw us to repentance. From a place of turning 180 degrees towards Christ and away from our brokenness, we are able to be all that God created us to be. In what areas of your life do you need the conviction (I.e. the advantage) of the Holy Spirit to help you turn around and embody the virtues of Christ evermore?
  • What examples or images of unity give you hope amidst a season of physical scattering, ideological divides, and injustices of all kinds?
  • What about these examples give you hope and what might they have to teach us about the nature of genuine Christ-led unity?
