The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

Matthew 20:20-28

Invitation to Wholeness: The Invitation to Service

Jonathan Nolasco, Associate Director of Missions and Outreach

We are invited to follow Jesus through our service but the cultural powers of our day make it difficult to carry out this calling. Looking at the challenge, Kingdom, and witness of service helps us follow Jesus by serving others because he first has served us.

I. The Challenge of Service

II. The Kingdom of Service

III. The Witness of Service

Discussion Questions

Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.

Begin by reading Matthew 20:20-28 aloud, taking turns reading the passages.

Pray over the group before beginning discussion.

  1. What cultural powers do you see present in your life and how might they be shaping us AWAY from service and away from faithful discipleship?
  2. Considering Jesus’ example, what particular acts of service does he show us to practice and what kind of movement do they require?
  3. What “tundra” are you currently in where you feel that you need God to reorient the landscape and create a new trail?
  4. What would it look like to live with a “Prophetic Imagination”? (Ex: following the tradition of the prophets who spoke to God’s vision for creation, lamented how far short we have fallen of that vision, and called us to repent and participate in God’s work of redemption)
  5. Where have you seen signs of God’s new creation in your past week? (See the NT Wright quote for examples)
  6. When was the last time you engaged in an act of service? In what way did it point back to God and his service of you?
  7. Pause as a group to write individually for a few moments or verbally share one by one on how God may be calling you to reorient yourself towards service. Is there a step for the group as well as individually?
