Breaking the Windows of the Soul

John 12:23-28
Eric Henderson, Senior Associate Pastor, erich@churchbcc.org

Central to the message of Jesus is the beauty of our own brokenness when offered in service to God. But In order for Christ to be on display through our brokenness, we must understand the relationship between our Spirit, Soul, and Body. Today, we will look at the soul and begin to answer three questions together:

What is the soul?

Why does the spirit need to be released?

How is the spirit released?

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

  1. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:23 – How does this help you understand the Spirit-Soul-Body distinction?
  2. Read Hebrews 4:12 - Why do the Spirit and Soul need to be divided?
  3. Consider the relationship of Spirit, Soul and Body . Is it helpful to you to think of it this way -that the “Spirit wears the Soul, and the Soul wears the Body.” How would you describe and/or define Spirit? How would you describe/define Soul?
  4. Compare these two stories about Peter: Mark 14: 66 – 72 Acts 2: 14 - 21. In which story is he living out of his Soul and in which one is he living out of his Spirit?
  5. To learn more about what happened to Peter Read John 21: 6 – 17 How did this encounter with Jesus re-shape Peter’s Spirit – Soul relationship?
  6. Thinking about your own life which of these stories about Peter can you relate with? Are you more like a fortress, a grain of wheat or an alabaster jar? (All references from the message on 1.26.20)
  7. Consider the ways your life bends to the will of your Soul rather than the Spirit within. What good fruit of the Spirit God wants to grow in you? (Gal 5: 16 – 25) Since it is God’s intent for our Soul and Spirit to reveal God’s image together, how might you walk more closely in step with the Spirit this week?
