The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

The Proper Prescription for Seeing Clearly
Psalm 73, Luke 24

Chris Lyons, Pastor of Children, Youth and Family Ministries

Consider the three places that we can focus:
I. A Place to Avoid
II. A Place to Enter
III. A New View of Goodness

Discussion Questions
Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.
  1. Pastor Chris described his experience of getting glasses that enabled him to see unlike he was able to before:
  2. Have you had a moment or experience in which you were able to see God in a new way?
  3. What was it and what made the difference?
  4. Changing your perspective can make all the difference. In what areas of your life might God be seeking to change your perspective?
  5. What has your experience been with the Psalms of the Bible? How have they been impactful, challenging, troublesome, or encouraging in your relationship with God?
  6. In Psalm 73:3 the psalmist writes of enjoying the proud as they see them prosper despite their wickedness. Pastor Chris described this as the “comparison trap”; in what ways do you see yourself or those around you falling victim to the comparison trap?
  7. To combat the comparison trap and shift our focus from what divides us to what unites us, Pastor Chris described how we are invited to “enter the sanctuary” and meet with God. What places serve as a sanctuary for you, a place to meet and encounter God in meaningful ways that re-focus your perspective through the lens of Christ?
  8. God is not more present to us in times of worship or in the sanctuary. Rather, these are moments that enable us to be more present to God. How can you be more present to God in this season?
  9. Pastor Chris explained that the goodness of God is in the nearness of God. Without experiencing God’s presence we cannot honestly say the words of Psalm 73:25: “Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth”. In what ways during this Lenten season might you be present to God for Christ to be near to you?
