The 2020 Advent Devotional was created in tandem with a special Advent Box containing materials to complete each activity/practice at the beginning of the week. However, if you did not receive a box, most of the activities can be recreated with items from around your house or neighborhood! We look forward to celebrating this season of hope and expectation with you—share your photos on social media and tag us along the way @bethanygreenlake!

A Beautiful Priest in the Neighborhood
Psalm 110

Richard Dahlstrom, Senior Pastor

God uses times in the wilderness to attune our hearts to him. This text seemed to about violent crushing of enemies in its first read. On closer examination I see it’s a text about the vital role God has for each of us in the midst of this crisis.
Who are the enemies God is defeating?
Fear is an enemy
Anxiety is an enemy
What is the Priest’s role?
What is our role?
Text “praying” to 646-00; we as a community want to pray for you.

Discussion Questions
Before questions, attempt to give the group a bit of a summary of the main points of the sermon and then choose a few questions that fit your group’s needs and style. We don’t intend for you to use all of these. Three to five questions may be a good number.

Trials are not the enemy.

In what ways have your trials right now seemed like an enemy?

What would it look to give thanks for what God is teaching you through the trials?

Fear is our enemy, and for most of us, that fear roots down into a core fear of death. Yet, we are called to die that we might live. Right now we are experiencing lots of deaths or losses (of hopes, expectations, etc.). What losses have you experienced right now?

James 4:13-17 recalls to us the truth that we are not in control of our lives.

How have you experienced this loss of control?

What would it look like to be open to this truth right now?

Even though our world is shaken, Christ remains unshaken. If we prepare for suffering by drawing near to him, what is one simple way that you can draw near to God this week?

Our role in this is to become obsessed by Jesus, which is lived out through a Rule of Life. Are there any shifts that might be helpful for your personal rule of life?

We are also called to pray for one another. Read Ephesians 2:4-10

Who is God nudging you to pray for this week?

What can help you remember to pray for these people every day?

Conversely, what do you need prayer for?

Text “praying” to 646-00 to submit prayer requests; we would be honored to be praying with and for you.
