Local Outreach


Local Outreach at Bethany exists to shine a light into our community by meeting people in their places of need and walking with them toward mutual growth and healing. These ministries seek to encourage and inspire our church members to a lifestyle of sharing God’s love in their everyday lives and to building bridges between the social and cultural divides in our community. Over Bethany's hundred year history we have had various local outreach ministries, the food bank being the longest standing ministry, as God has given vision to volunteer leaders and enabled them to build teams to carry it out.

Community Meals

Through our community meal, we seek to create space where connection can happen between the church and our surrounding neighbors while meeting a practical need.  Come, enjoy a meal, make a new friend, and just sit with our guests sharing God's love.  Families are welcome!

Meals are the second and last Mondays of each month, 6–8pm, in the CLC building.
This ministry has four teams who work together to create each meal:

Meal Prep Team

The meal prep team coordinates and prepares creative and nutritious meals, often taking requests from our guests. The meal usually runs from 6-7 pm, and prep starts at 4 pm.

Setup Team Team

The setup team helps facilitate a welcoming environment by setting up table decorations and preparing the space for our guests

Serving Team

The serving team keeps cares our neighbors by greeting our guests and serving them food. Members of this team answer questions and act as hosts and minglers once the food is served.

Cleanup Team 

The serving team helps keep our space clean by wasking dishes, taking down decorations, wiping tables, and cleaning the kitchen. Generally, Cleanup finishes around 8pm.

Since 2006, Bethany has run an overflow shelter in partnership with Noel House in downtown Seattle, and it hosts up to 12 homeless women each night. We are open Tuesday–Friday every week. The shelter is run by volunteer teams of both men and women.

Overnight Team

Two volunteers stay each night from 8:30pm–7am. Volunteers are able to sleep through the night and then serve a small breakfast the following morning. This role is at the center of the ministry - crucial for the shelter to stay open each night.

Hospitality Team

Volunteers arrive at 8:30pm to set up the shelter space with beds and lighting, and they manage the clothing closet and book cart. Additionally, they chat with the ladies as they browse for new clothes or settle in for the night. This is a critical role in making these ladies feel at home. Hours are 8:30–10pm.


Nutrition Team

Two volunteers prepare a light meal in the evening and a small breakfast to be served by the Overnight Team the next morning. Volunteers also pick up fresh produce from local farmers' markets each week for nutritious meals. A Washington Food Handler's Permit is encouraged. Hours are 8:15–10:15pm.


Transportation Team

One volunteer picks up our overnight guests from Noel House with a Bethany bus, and a second volunteer returns them the following morning by 6:45am. Evening hours are 8:30–9:30pm (Tues.–Fri.); morning hours are 6:15–7am (Wed.–Sat.).

Food Bank

The Bethany Food Bank is committed to providing emergency food to families and individuals in our community. We are currently open every Monday, 6–7pm. We also provide food for staff to give out during the week.

Open Hours Team

Prepares the Chapel for guests and distributes food. This team arrives around 5pm to pack bags and organize the space, generally staying until close at 7pm.

Restocking Team

Puts together bags of food to be passed out.

Shopping Team

Takes inventory of current food supplies and heads to the grocery store to supplement current donations.


Another way to get involved is by donating food items. Donation bins are located in the Sanctuary foyer and in the Chapel. We collect one needed item each month, July is ramen noodles.

Women's Clothing Closet

We always accept clothing donations for our shelter guests.

We currently need the following:
  • Large-size clothes

  • Hoodies, sweatshirts, and sweaters

  • Rainproof jackets, heavy coats

  • Jeans, capris, shorts

  • T-shirts, tank tops

  • Flat shoes, tennis shoes

  • New underwear, new or gently used socks and bras, gloves

  • Dental supplies, lotion, soap, hair-care products

We do NOT need these items:
  • High-heeled shoes, fancy dresses and apparel

  • Business slacks, skirts, and jackets

  • Kids' clothes

  • Worn clothes

  • Books

Please drop off donations in the Chapel or Sanctuary foyer bins. If you have a donation greater than two large bags, please give us a heads up! Contact Nancy Best.


Adoption and Foster Care Ministry

The Foster Care Ministry seeks to support children and families within the foster care system, partnering with our local Department of Social and Health Services to provide for material needs, mentoring, and other services.

Support Group

First Tuesday of each month (September–June), 6:30–8:30pm, Sanctuary Classroom A, Childcare provided

The Adoption and Foster Care Support Group offers support, fellowship, and education to anyone who is curious about or connected to adoption or foster care. Attendees can include those thinking of adopting or providing foster care, those currently in the process, those who have adopted, and those who have been adopted.

Church-School Partnership with Daniel Bagley Elementary 

Bethany has had a growing relationship with Daniel Bagley Elementary since 1969. Over the years, Bethany has helped with and supported: Bagley workdays, PTA fundraisers, levies, the annual holiday giving circle, school supply drives, and teacher initiatives. In turn, Bagley has opened its facilities and grounds for cooking, activities, and classroom space. In 2008, we partnered together for a new parking lot at Bagley, in a mutually beneficial scenario. Bethany funded the new, 80 space, eco-friendly parking lot and gained access to the space for Sunday parking.  In addition to providing a place for teachers to park, this new lot helped to improve safety conditions during school pick-up and drop-off. In the fall of 2016, we took another step forward in a “Church-School Partnership” to transform our Green Lake community by looking to meet the needs of Bagley students, their families, and Bagley staff. 

Going Forward

Our goal is to meet practical needs at Daniel Bagley that fit our congregation’s abilities and are an example of our love for Jesus and our neighbors. In 2017, this will include two upcoming BCC work days. Further, wanting to use our new Community Life Center (2017), for the good of our neighbors, we’re exploring options beyond our Community Meal and weekly Food Bank. We’ve identified with guidance from Bagley principal, Carla Holmes, the need for more afterschool programing for working, low income families. We envision an inclusive and dynamic afterschool program that supports the academic goals of Bagley.
