Sarah Buehler
Director of Operations
How long have you been working at Bethany, and what is it you do here?
I’ve been supporting the Bethany pastoral staff, lay leaders, and congregation as Director of Operations since April 21, 2006.
What is your greatest accomplishment that isn’t work- or school-related?
I was interviewed for a Kazakh newspaper back in 2002 and after it was published (with a photograph), people I had never met would call out my name when they saw me walking down the street. Does that count? Or maybe competing with my horse, Huckleberry Finn, at the International Show Jumping Championships in Lexington, KY? Or making it safely over the Kyrgyz border during a time of civil war? Or marrying and living with my best friend since September 2007? That might be my greatest accomplishment and joy in life. I also spend my free time gardening, leading Tabitha Ministries, and recently began mentoring a Kazakh student in servant leadership.
If you could travel back in time to your high school graduation, and you had a full ride to the college of your choice…where would you go and what would you study?
Princeton. I was offered a full ride basketball scholarship there but was afraid to take it because I thought I wasn’t good enough. Had I to do it all over again, I would attend Princeton, play basketball, and study ceramics or interior design.
You have been commissioned to organize a concert in commemoration of Bethany’s 100th anniversary in 2016. Choose a band, venue, and song.
“Lollipop, Lollipop” in the quad at UW with Mika and Andrea Bocelli.
When was the last time you got stuck somewhere? What was the outcome?
I was heading out on a camping trip when I lived in Russia and when got off the train I didn’t know where I was (mistake number 1), didn’t have any money with me to get a ticket to try to go somewhere else (mistake number 2), didn’t have a map (mistake number 3), and only had a snack-size bag of peanuts with me (mistakes number 4 and 5, since I didn’t have any money to purchase food, either). Outcome? I snuck onto a train heading back where I had just come from, avoided the ticket guy, and made my way home to a) pick up some money, b) eat some food, and c) get directions to my campsite. I finally made it to my campsite and had to pitch my tent in the dark.
What is one thing you love about being on staff at BCC?
I love the people I work with and the mission we strive for together. I’ve always wanted to utilize my administrative gifts to support the church and find great job and satisfaction in my supporting role at Bethany. I’ve also been supported myself as I’ve traveled the road of joy in my recent marriage and sorrow at the loss of my mom. I never would have imagined this support possible in a work situation, but I am tremendously grateful for it.
