Karen Engle
Pastoral Administrative Assistant
How long have you been working at Bethany, and what is it you do here?
I started working here in January 2008 as the Pastoral Administrative Assistant. My job description includes event planning, small groups management, class scheduling, volunteer recruitment, running the Sunday Night Dinner program, and quite a few other random things.
What is your greatest accomplishment that isn’t work- or school-related?
Winning a national synchronized swimming competition. It was great to work so hard for so long and have it pay off!
If you could travel back in time to your high school graduation, and you had a full ride to the college of your choice…where would you go and what would you study?
There are so many options, I don’t know how to pick! Maybe archeology at Cornell – I think it would be awesome to dig stuff up and discover more about how people used to live. Or maybe marine biology – I love the water and anything that lives in it. Or English – reading is my favorite hobby so I think it would be fun to be a book editor.
You have been commissioned to organize a concert in commemoration of Bethany’s 100th anniversary in 2016. Choose a band, venue, and song.
“We are Family” by Sister Sledge. I’m not sure who would perform it, but it would be awesome if they could play on the roof of the Sanctuary!
When was the last time you got stuck somewhere? What was the outcome?
I was in Ecuador in a canoe in the rain forest, trying to get to the airport to catch a flight back to Quito. The canoe had an outboard motor that cut out, and so I was stuck with a group of 20 college students while we floated the wrong way down the river; the man driving kept telling us, “It’s OK, it’s OK,” while he kicked the motor and swore in Spanish. Luckily, it finally came back to life and even though we were really late for the plane, they waited for us because we had bought more than half the tickets. Otherwise, we would have been stuck for a week until the next plane came.
What is one thing you love about being on staff at BCC?
There are so many talented, creative people here who care about the world.
