Bethany's Global Outreach is based on the belief that changing the way we live can change the world. We are challenging ourselves to reject the consumerism and greed of our culture and instead move toward lives of generosity. Our global outreach does not assume that we can "fix" the world's problems, but that we have something we can contribute to its reconciliation as representatives of Christ's body in the world. There are two ways in which Bethany members can engage in global outreach:
Spilling Hope began in 2009 as a 50 day commitment to live simply, change our daily routines to save $1 a day, and donate our savings to build deep borehole wells in Uganda with Living Water International. Since then, Spilling Hope has grown to include two more global partners (World Relief in Rwanda and Roblealto Child Care Association in Costa Rica), and has become "Spilling Hope 365," a daily challenge to:Simplify, developing healthy stewardship habits that move us away from greed, consumerism, and materialism, and toward generosity.Learn about the issues of water and poverty and engage with our partners in Uganda, Rwanda, and Costa Rica through prayer, events, and trips.Give, not through a one-time offering, but throughout the year in tithes to support our Spilling Hope 365 partnerships as part of the general church budget.Visit our Global Partners page for more information about the organizations we are currently partnering with.
At Bethany, our short-term mission trips are used as strategic visits to our global partners with the objective of building the relationship and facilitating connection between our congregation and the partner organization. We seek to expand our congregation's understanding of how God is working in the world and how they can get involved. We hope to build long-term, reciprocal, and prayerful relationships with our partners. All trips require team members to begin learning about the partnership through a Community Group, so keep an eye on the Connect Catalog for upcoming groups (distributed in January, May, and September). Only Bethany organized trips are promoted in the Connect Catalog. Upcoming trips include Rwanda (fall 2013).
